After working as a houseparent at a home for emotionally and physically abused children, I realized that there was much to learn in order to be effective helping people make changes in their lives. I earned a master’s degree in clinical psychology from George Mason University in 1981, and after that moved to Wilmington. I worked as a counselor for Coastal Horizons Center, for Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, and then for UNC-W in the Student Development Center. I ventured into private practice in 1989 and have been at Carolina Counseling Center since 1991. My practice includes working with individuals, families and couples. Depending on the client’s needs, I use an integrated approach including cognitive-behavioral, solution focused, interpersonal and insight oriented therapies, believing that one size does not fit all. My purpose is to help individuals identify and adjust patterns of behavior or thinking that contribute to unhappiness and get in the way of achieving personal goals. In addition to state licensure, I am a Nationally Certified Psychologist and a Board Certified Clinical Psychotherapist as recognized by the North American Association of Masters in Psychology.
