I have been in private practice in Wilmington since 1981, following work in community health settings and with psychological services of the New Hanover County school system. Concurrently with my initial years in private practice, I taught a variety of undergraduate classes (one a semester) at UNC-W until 1999. My training and experience have encompassed work with children and adults of all ages, and I have continued to enjoy the challenges and rewards of both. My approach is best described as in the mindset of cognitive-behavioral theory, enriched by concepts derived from a broad background that includes interpersonal focus, psychodynamic understanding of self, learning theory, Linehan’s dialectic of acceptance and change, and incorporation of the individual’s relevant medical information. Whether the therapy is short or long, situationally focused or broad and deep in scope, the therapeutic relationship becomes the scaffolding for validation of worth and capability and for belief in the potential of the individual or couple or family to better understand, adapt to and/or improve one’s choices on life’s path. Therapy attempts to provide a place for initiation and growth of those positive changes in thought and action, with as much joy and humor as one can bring to that path.

I welcome everyone to read the opening statement on the website about the upcoming merger with the practitioners of Inner Solutions Counseling Center and the remodeling of the 2450 Delaney Ave. building.  As indicated, the remodel is expected to take about three months beginning in mid-June.

During the renovation, I will be located within the office of Dr. Karen Kirk at 2601 Iron Gate Drive, Suite 101, which is between Shipyard Blvd. and Independence Ave. off of Ashton Drive.  My number will be 910-470-9247.  Please go directly to my extension to leave messages.  Current patients may also reach me by leaving a short message on my cell phone 910-233-7036.  I am not currently taking new patients.

I will be out of the office from June 6 through July 5.  I will be contacting current patients with their next appointment date and look forward to seeing you as scheduled in person at Dr. Karen Kirk’s office on Iron Gate Drive.
